Transportation

HISD’s Transportation Department plays a critical role in ensuring equitable access to high-quality education by removing a barrier to learning: reliable transportation. Every day, the department safely transports thousands of students to and from school, helping to ensure that distance is never an obstacle to opportunity. This commitment reflects the District’s broader mission to create a student-centered learning environment for all.

Transportation Eligibility

A student who meets one or more of the following criteria are eligible for transportation to and from school:

  • Attend their zoned campus and reside 2 or more miles from campus
  • Attend a school of choice on an approved transfer code (magnet, CTE) and reside 2 or more miles from campus
  • Travel a pedestrian route deemed hazardous by the HISD transportation department and approved as such by the HISD school board
  • Attend a school other than their zoned school due to campus over enrollment (“capping”) and reside 2 or more miles from campus
  • Attend a school in order to access a specialized program (e.g., language of instruction, unique special education program) and reside 2 or more miles from campus

Please note that students who attend a school of choice on a space-available or hardship transfer are not eligible for transportation.

To request transportation for your student, please complete the transportation request survey. Once the Routing & Scheduling Department receives your request, it will be processed within 10 business days. Only students eligible for transportation based on HISD’s transportation eligibility requirements will be approved for transportation.
