Our school is a place we honor and respect. Our clothing should be worn in a way that demonstrates our sense of respect to our school and each other. The purpose of this dress code is to:

Ensure a safe learning environment;

Allow for student agency and choice; and,

Promote a climate of effective behavior that does not distract from the educational process.
General:
No student clothing, jewelry, belts, belt buckles, shoelaces, or any other fashion accessories shall display words or symbols that advocate or depict violence, weapons, drugs, alcohol, sex, gang affiliation or other illegal activity expressed or implied. No student clothing or accessories shall be used in a disruptive way. Clothing, accessories, jewelry, etc. that have caused past disruption to the school environment is also not allowed. Make-up must not be distracting. Pajamas and costumes are only permitted on approved days communicated by BCS staff.
Headwear: Inside the building, headwear is limited to religious coverings. Hoodies may be worn in the building with the exception of testing dates or by teacher direction. Hats may be worn outside.
Tops: Shoulders and abdomen must be covered at all times. Polo style shirts and t-shirts are permitted. Underclothes and undergarments, including boys’ undershirts, should be covered and not worn as the outer layer of clothing.
Bottoms: The length of bottoms should be appropriate for a school setting by having buttocks covered at all times. Bottoms should sit at or above the hip bone. Athletic shorts, jeans, elastic waist bottoms, and leggings are allowed.
Shoes:
- Shoes must be closed-toed and closed-heeled (for example, tennis shoes). Students are encouraged to wear athletic-type or tennis shoes daily due to recess and Physical Education classes.

For safety reasons, platform shoes, spiked heels, steel-toed boots, or any backless shoes (including clogs, house shoes, sandals, open-toed shoes, flip-flop shoes, aqua socks, and flip-flop type sandals) are NOT allowed.
Outerwear: Winter hats and gloves should only be worn outside. Inside the building, students are welcome to wear a sweatshirt, sweater, or light jacket.
Events: For field trips and competitions, specific outfits may be required by the coach, teacher, or advisor.
The administration is the final arbiter on what detracts from the educational process and dress code enforcement.
Noncompliance may result in:

A call home to parent or guardian,
-
A parent/teacher/student conference
-
Refocus behavior
-
Loss of privileges
-
Being required to change into a more appropriate outfit.
If repeated violations occur, a child may lose the privilege of using this dress code, and may be required to wear a student uniform. Dress code violation is a Level II infraction; repeated violations are Level III infraction in the HISD Student Code of Conduct.
