School History
A History of Collaborative Efforts
Briarmeadow Charter School (BCS) opened in August 1997, as an educational choice for families in west Houston (Pilgrim, Briargrove, Piney Point & Emerson attendance zones). Our learning community established a partnership among professional educators, involved parents, and local community members to create a learner-centered, academic environment.
The school was created through grass roots efforts of educators committed to academic excellence and dedicated community members looking for a “private school environment within the public-school setting.” The Houston Independent School District offered that possibility in the form of an HISD Charter School. BCS sets higher standards for academic excellence while ensuring alignment with the District’s vision and goals. Some unique features include:
-
Individual focus on student achievement and talents
-
School wide enrichment to nurture giftedness in a variety of contents and context
-
Inquiry-based instruction at all levels
-
International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP)
-
Advanced curriculum middle school program
-
Teacher training & collaboration on curriculum, instruction, and assessment
